Standing by you

This disaster is beyond imagination,
a sorrow too immense for words to hold.
And those we count among the lost
are not numbers written on a page.
They are someone’s mother, someone’s father,
a brother, a sister, a cousin, a friend,
a neighbour whose familiar voice
once filled an ordinary day.
Homes can rise again.
Walls can be rebuilt,
roads repaired, possessions replaced,
but what can replace a life?
What can erase the memories
left behind in those who survived?
The wounds we cannot see
may remain long after the earth grows still.
Standing beside you
is the least we can do,
not as strangers divided by borders,
but as brothers and sisters in humanity.
There are moments when nature speaks
with a force we cannot understand.
And when its rage arrives at such a scale,
we are reminded how small we truly are
before powers greater than ourselves.
We dream.
We love.
We hate.
We become angry.
We worry.
We hurt.
We plan for tomorrow
as though tomorrow were ours to command.
And then, in a single moment,
we are reminded of our fragility.
So let this be the time we unite.
Say a beautiful word
to someone drowning in grief.
Hold a trembling hand.
Give a hug without needing to speak.
Give what you can,
even if no one ever knows your name.
Because sometimes humanity
is found in the smallest acts
during the darkest hours.
This is the time to stand together.
This is the time to open our hearts.
This is the time to pray
for those who were lost,
for those searching,
for those grieving,
But mainly for those who survived.
