Beneath the Olive Tree
Where My Childhood First Met Poetry
I was only a child,
in the hills of my beloved Lebanon,
where olive trees were older than our stories,
and life was measured
in harvests, hardship, and love.
I was meant to help my family,
to gather olives from the earth,
to fill the baskets with the little treasures
that would become our bread,
our warmth, our tomorrow.
But I had a secret.
High among the ancient branches,
I would escape the weight of the day,
wrap my little arms around the olive tree,
rest my cheek against its weathered bark,
and surrender to dreams
while my family laboured below.
They gathered olives.
I gathered dreams.
They listened for the fruit falling to the ground.
I listened to the leaves whispering to the wind.
And somewhere between
the rustling branches and the Mediterranean sky,
without knowing what poetry was,
I had already begun to write it in my soul.
The tree became my first storyteller,
the wind, my first verse,
and the silence between its leaves,
my earliest lesson in beauty.
I did not understand then
the tired hands beneath me,
the sacrifices hidden in their silence,
or how much love it took
to keep a family standing.
I only knew that I was safe,
that the world was beautiful,
and that an old olive tree
could hold a little boy
closer than the world ever would.
Decades have passed.
The hands that gathered may have grown still,
the voices may have faded,
and childhood has become
a distant shore I can no longer reach.
Yet whenever I close my eyes,
I am that little boy again,
embracing a branch,
half asleep, half dreaming,
while the people I loved
gather tomorrow beneath my feet.
And now I understand.
They were harvesting olives
to nourish our bodies.
While that ancient tree
was quietly nourishing my soul.
Perhaps that is why
I have spent my life searching for words
to describe what I felt
before I even knew how to name it.
And if I could return
to just one moment of my life,
I would not ask for wealth,
nor youth, nor another tomorrow.
I would ask for one more afternoon,
one more embrace of that ancient branch,
one more chance to hear their voices below.
And perhaps, this time,
I would stay awake a little longer.
